The draft describes an open standard protocol for AV-over-IP systems interoperability.
InfoComm 2023 will be taking place from June 14-16 in Orlando, Florida, and AIMS will be there to host a live interoperability demonstration of the Internet Protocol Media Experience (IPMX™) standard. Visitors to booth 4181 will see networking equipment and hardware and software nodes running both IPMX and SMPTE ST 2110, in addition to gateways between IPMX and other protocols, developer kits, and elements of IPMX-enabled AV-over-IP workflows. Several AIMS members will also be providing their own demonstrations of IPMX products at the show, and giving presentations on a variety of IPMX-related topics.
AIMS will also be discussing the initial drafts of the Video Services Forum’s (VSF) TR-10 suite of Technical Recommendations for IPMX. Recently made available to the public, the VSF TR-10 suite outlines the differences between SMPTE ST 2110 and IPMX, with documents covering everything from system time and definitions, to using AMWA Networked Media Open Specifications (NMOS) APIs, to the transparent transport of AES3 audio using the RTP protocol. At AIMS’ booth, a representative will be available for in-depth conversations on these documents.
InfoComm comes on the heels of the 2023 NAB Show, which featured the return of the IP Showcase. In Las Vegas, top experts gave over 30 presentations in the IP Showcase Theater on a wide range of IP-related topics — from the latest developments in SMPTE ST 2110 to NMOS, ground-to-cloud architectures, IPMX, QC monitoring and maintenance, cloud-based production, and much more. If you weren’t able to attend — or need a refresher on a certain topic — videos of the presentations are now available for viewing on the IP Showcase website.
In addition, AIMS announced it newest members at the NAB Show: Colorlight, a pioneer in video and image processing; and Media Links, a pioneer in media-over-IP transport technology. With their extensive IP media transport experience in both broadcasting and Pro AV applications, both companies will be instrumental in helping AIMS drive the adoption of IP and IPMX in new markets. AV Network covers the announcement in a new online article, available here.
BOTHELL, Wash. — May 30, 2023 — The Alliance for IP Media Solutions (AIMS) today announced that the Video Services Forum (VSF) has made available to the public the initial drafts of its TR-10 suite of Technical Recommendations for Internet Protocol Media Experience (IPMX™) — a set of open standard-based protocols designed to ensure interoperability for AV-over-IP systems in the media, entertainment, and Pro AV industries.
Based on the SMPTE ST 2110 standard and developed through a collaboration between AIMS and the Joint Taskforce on Network Media (JT-NM) — which includes VSF, the Advanced Media Workflow Association (AMWA), the European Broadcasting Union (EBU), and SMPTE — IPMX gives manufacturers and developers everything they need to create low-latency, interoperable, IP-based AV products and applications. The VSF TR-10 suite outlines the differences between SMPTE ST 2110 and IPMX, with documents covering everything from system time and definitions, to using AMWA Networked Media Open Specifications (NMOS) APIs, to the transparent transport of AES3 audio using the RTP protocol.
“The release of VSF’s TR-10 drafts represents a major milestone in the work on IPMX, and we couldn’t be more excited to announce that they are now available for the public to preview and comment on,” said Jack Douglass, co-chair of the VSF IPMX Activity Group. “At this stage, several manufacturers have made implementations based on these documents, and those implementations have been tested in multiple labs and interoperability trials. Now we are closing in on the last stages before they are finalized within VSF.”
“The VSF is pleased to have participated with its industry partners in developing IPMX, and we believe it will have a major impact in both the Pro AV and media & entertainment industries,” said Richard Friedel, president of the VSF.
The TR-10 draft documents are available for free download on VSF’s website at https://vsf.tv/technical_recommendations.shtml. More information about AIMS and its work is available at www.aimsalliance.org.
IPMX is based on ST 2110, which includes audio standards based on AES67. If you are designing or installing an AV-over-IP system, the relationship between these terms is both interesting and important to understand. Read on!
Alliance to Host Innovative IPMX AV-Over-IP Interoperability Demo, Highlighting VSF’s Suite of Technical Recommendations
BOTHELL, Wash. — May 25, 2023 — The Alliance for IP Media Solutions (AIMS) today announced that the organization will host a live interoperability demonstration of Internet Protocol Media Experience (IPMX™) — a set of open standard-based protocols designed to ensure interoperability for AV-over-IP systems in the media, entertainment, and Pro AV industries — at InfoComm 2023, June 14-16 in Orlando, Florida. In booth 4181, AIMS will also be highlighting and discussing the recently released, initial drafts of the Video Services Forum’s (VSF) TR-10 suite of Technical Recommendations for IPMX.
IPMX implements a standards-based approach based on SMPTE ST 2110 with features and capabilities that target the specific needs of the Pro AV industry. In addition to simplifying implementation of SMPTE ST 2110 and ensuring interoperability for AV-over-IP systems, IPMX incorporates other features tailored to Pro AV installations. These features include AMWA NMOS IS-04 and IS-05 for discovery, registration, and connection management, as well as specifications for copy protection and security.
In addition to interoperability demonstrations hosted in the AIMS booth, AIMS will be offering presentations on AV-over-IP and IPMX in a mini-theatre and will be providing information on live equipment demonstrations taking place in other booths across the InfoComm show floor.
“IPMX has made great strides over the last year in terms of multivendor interoperability. Not only will AIMS be highlighting its capabilities at InfoComm 2023, but many of our members will be providing their own demonstrations of a wide range of IPMX-ready products while also giving presentations on a variety of IPMX-related topics,” said Samuel Recine, chair of the Pro AV Working Group at AIMS. “Another important milestone for IPMX in the last year was the release of VSF’s TR-10 drafts. Many manufacturers have already made implementations based on these documents, and we’re excited to discuss them with visitors to our booth.”

It may have been the major national and international broadcasters who initially led the IP revolution, there’s now plenty of evidence that smaller organizations such as regional broadcasters are catching up – finances permitting, writes David Davies.
A new division of long-established broadcast technology company Sencore, PlexusAV will offer an interoperable AV over IP product lineup based on the AIMS Alliance IPMX standard.
Constraints deliver interoperability for proprietary AV-over-IP technology solutions, but the situation is different for an open standard like IPMX.
BOTHELL, Wash. — May 15, 2023 — The Audio Engineering Society (AES), Alliance for IP Media Solutions (AIMS), Advanced Media Workflow Association (AMWA), European Broadcasting Union (EBU), SMPTE®, and the Video Services Forum (VSF) today announced that over 40 videos of presentations given in the IP Showcase Theater at the 2023 NAB Show in Las Vegas are now available for viewing on the IP Showcase website. Given by top experts, the 30-minute presentations cover a wide range of IP-related topics — from the latest developments in SMPTE ST 2110 to NMOS, ground-to-cloud architectures, IPMX, QC monitoring and maintenance, cloud-based production, and much more.
The IP Showcase is committed to educating attendees at major industry events on the potential of IP media solutions, and the IP Showcase Theater is at the heart of that commitment. Unlike other NAB presentations that were company-sponsored or thought leadership opportunities, presentations in the IP Showcase Theater were delivered by hands-on engineers who instruct attendees on exactly how to move to an IP infrastructure.
“The IP Showcase at the 2023 NAB Show was a resounding success, featuring more presentations in the Theater than ever before. For those who weren’t able to attend — or need a refresher on a certain topic — the online library of presentation videos offers a valuable educational resource,” said Andrew Starks, an AIMS board of directors member and director of product management for Macnica. “We’d like to thank our members, partners, and of course the presenters themselves for making the event one to remember.”
The IP Showcase presentation videos are available for viewing here. Further information about the IP Showcase is available at www.ipshowcase.org.
AIMS, its partners, and its membership have been busy this last month, and more is in the works.
Of course, the most notable April event for AIMS was the IP Showcase at the 2023 NAB Show. The IP Showcase has proven to be a vital source of information and insight for media organizations moving to IP. In its return to this year’s Centennial NAB Show, IP Showcase focused on the business and creative potential of IP media solutions. The popular event concentrated on market requirements as media operations move toward all-IP connectivity and content delivery to multiscreen platforms, as well as the evolving SMPTE ST 2110 standards and the AMWA NMOS technology stack and how they are improving media workflows for large and small deployments alike.
IP Showcase is unique in that unlike trying to sell you products or solutions, collaborator-partners – AES, AIMS, AMWA, EBU, SMPTE, and VSF – are dedicated to educating, exploring, and engaging with attendees, as well as providing demonstrations and resources designed to ease deployment for end users.
Technical presentations at the IP Showcase Theater were an important part of this year’s show covering topics related to media-over-IP, timing in IP production, interoperability, compression in IP production, test and measurement, RIST, PTP, IPMX, and much more. In addition to the presentations on the Main Stage, the IP Showcase also featured new Meet Up sessions in which attendees were invited to participate in discussion sessions with industry experts, and address current topics and issues related to the industry’s transition to IP. Couldn’t make it to this year’s IP Showcase? Videos of each presentation will be available soon at ipshowcase.org! You can also read more about the must-see event in audioXpress’ article “IP Showcase Set to Educate, Explore, and Engage at the 2023 NAB Show.”
Looking ahead to the next big show, AIMS is hard at work preparing for its return to InfoComm 2023. The alliance will be exhibiting in Booth 4181, June 14-16 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida. AIMS will bring the latest news and innovations regarding the IPMX standard. Registration is now open, so, be sure to mark your calendar and keep an eye out for further details on the IPMX.io and AIMS websites. It’s an event you won’t want to miss!
