The publication of the first standards in the SMPTE ST 2110 suite was widely hailed as a milestone in the adoption of IP-based media networking. But, although important, it is only one dimension of a standards odyssey that still has a lot of distance to cover, writes David Davies.
The Alliance for IP Media Solutions (AIMS) today announced that at InfoComm 2019, representatives from AIMS member companies will be providing three days of educational presentations on the subject of adopting open standards for AV over IP. The presentations will take place in the AIMS Theatre at Booth 375. In addition to making individual presentations, AIMS members will also participate in the session “Audio and Video Streaming Using Established IP Standards,” to be held on Tuesday, June 11, from 1 to 3 p.m. in Room W304E.
“AIMS members believe strongly that the future of AV over IP should be built on a technology infrastructure that is based on open standards, and we’re at InfoComm to advocate for this concept,” said David Chiappini, the AIMS ProAV Working Group chair. “This is not the first technology transition our industry has been through, and we need to understand the lessons of the past — which simply amount to this: Open standards provide the industry with maximum agility and flexibility to adjust business models, capitalize on new revenue opportunities, and add new capabilities and services without having to constantly rebuild workflows.”
The educational presentations at the AIMS booth will take place from 10 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday of the show and from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Friday. The following presentations will be repeated several times during the three days.
- “Who Is AIMS and What Is SMPTE ST 2110?” Andre Testa, Director of ASIC/FPGA Engineering, Matrox
- “NMOS: The Open AV Over IP API,” Andrew Starks, Director of Product Management, Macnica
- “How Open Standards Like AES67 and ST 2110 Drive Innovation,” Bill Rounopoulos, Business Development Manager, OEM & Partnerships, Ross Video
- “ST 2110 and Intercomm,” Martin Dyster, Vice President, Business Development — TV, The Telos Alliance
In the Tuesday session, “Audio and Video Streaming Using Established IP Standards,” AIMS members will speak on the following:
- “The Origins of Audio Over IP and the Need for Standards,” Richard Zwiebel, Vice President, Systems Strategy, QSC
- “There’s Nothing to Be Afraid of With SMPTE ST 2110,” Andrew Starks, Director of Product Management, Macnica
- “The Open Standards-Based Method for AV Over IP,” Scott Barella, Chief Technology Officer at Pesa and Deputy Chairman of AIMS ProAV Working Group
- “Next-Gen IP for Networked Media — Collision or Convergence?” Karl Paulsen, Chief Technology Officer, Diversified
The full schedule can be found on the AIMS website at https://aimsalliance.org/theater-presentations-infocomm-2019/.
The theatre schedule at AIMS Booth 375 at InfoComm is now available. Four educational sessions will rotate through three days of the show. See the complete line up here.
Next-gen IP facilities will see a significant shift from copper-based cabling (coax with BNCs and structured-cabling with 8P8C connectors) to optical fiber media. Expect a near total elimination of video patch panels and a major shift in design documentation. Coaxial cable in all IP-network-based designs may be reduced by as much as 90-95%. Other copper cabling will be limited to individual transition devices (e.g., gateways to/from SDI), system management (sub-1 gigabit) and AES67 audio. Coax and STP-cables will likely stay isolated as jumpers between devices and patch panels, but those hundreds of high density BNC connectors for unidirectional signals on coax will all but be eliminated.
Returning to the NAB Show for the third year, the IP Showcase will once again provide educational opportunities for learning about implementation of standards-based IP infrastructures for real-time professional media applications, demonstrations of the latest technical achievements and a clear view of advances on the horizon, and highlights of market deployments in facilities around the world.
The Alliance for IP Media Solutions (AIMS) today announced the launch of a new Pro AV Working Group tasked with promoting the adoption of one set of media-over-IP protocols for the professional AV and installed systems market. AIMS has appointed David Chiappini as chair and Scott Barella as deputy chair of the new working group.
The AIMS Pro AV Working Group will define an open-standards approach to addressing the pro AV world’s move toward IP media. The group’s efforts will be based on evaluating and recommending existing standards and specifications from AES, AMWA, VSF, SMPTE, IEEE, and IETF that already have been broadly adopted by the media and entertainment industry, incorporating pro AV-market-specific features including security, HDCP support for protected content, and IO control. The anticipated result of the Pro AV Working Group’s efforts is a flexible, future-proof method for meeting the video, audio, and data requirements of current and future pro AV solutions.
Chiappini, the new working group’s chair, is vice president of research and development for AIMS member Matrox. He has served in a variety of roles at Matrox since 1994 and currently manages the engineering teams behind the Matrox pro AV and broadcast products lines. Chiappini has extensive expertise and experience in the AV-over-IP movement, and he is involved in developing compressed and uncompressed products for that space.
Barella, who is CTO at PESA, provides leadership and insight for the company’s delivery of robust security components to video, audio, and data signals in the Ethernet fabric, as well as compression and distribution technologies. In addition to his new role as deputy chair of the Pro AV Working Group, he also serves as the AIMS Technical Working Group deputy chair. Barella has a strong background in broadcast systems design and architecture, OEM manufacturing and design, systems integration, and operations, with particular emphasis on IP video.
With over 100 members continuing to work toward standards-based IP signal transport, the Alliance for IP Media Solutions (AIMS) is attending ISE 2019 with a focus on open standards and specifications for media over COTS IT networks. AIMS will promote the adoption of open standards for video and audio in the pro AV market. Front and center is the SMPTE ST 2110 suite of standards for transporting video, audio and data, which is already in use and deployed by the media and entertainment industry.
At the show, AIMS will conduct demos, a panel presentation, and other activities geared toward helping the pro AV and install markets make a smooth transition to IP infrastructure. In addition to participating in AIMS’ own activities, vendors active in these markets will host their own interoperability demos on their stands, giving attendees greater access to the solutions that make an open standards approach possible.
AIMS Presentation at ISE 2019
Representatives of the AIMS membership will conduct a two-hour panel presentation titled “Audio and Video Streaming Using Well-Established IP Standards (ST 2110, AES67).” Industry experts with both audio and video networking experience will describe the standards and ongoing improvements to ensure a future-forward, simple, and streamlined approach to professional AV installations.

Company Quote:
“ISE has served as an important forum for AIMS as we’ve worked to promote a standards- and open-specification-based approach to IP — but this year’s show offers even greater opportunities. We began with the promotion of AES67. Now that the ratified SMPTE ST 2110 standards are entering their second year, we are driving toward one set of video and audio standards and specifications for the pro AV market. We’re looking forward not only to demonstrating the real-world progress that’s being made on standards adoption and the IP migration, but also to helping attendees understand how all the standards and specifications work together and how best to implement them.”
