In a continuation of its long-term emphasis on education around IP audio standards, the Alliance for IP Media Solutions (AIMS) held an online TechFest on 9-10 March which addressed both current standards initiatives and the implementation of IP-based remote audio production in a “changing landscape” for media delivery.
IPMX is based on the SMPTE ST 2110 standard deployed throughout broadcast but adapted specifically for pro AV needs, with the addition of HDCP copy protection, network discovery and registration, and I/O management, including multichannel surround sound. IPMX is designed to be simple to deploy, requiring only basic networking equipment; it scales, supporting any bitrate with compressed or uncompressed streams; and is video format-agnostic.
You know it’s coming, and you need to be ready for it, but the path to supporting AV-over-IP in your next generation product is still really confusing and choosing a particular protocol implementation feels like a gamble that you just can’t afford to lose!
The Alliance for IP Media Solutions (AIMS) has announced a newly elected 2020-2021 board of directors that will lead the organization’s effort toward a standards-based IP infrastructure for professional media.
The Alliance for IP Media Solutions (AIMS) has announced it will host ‘Game On,’ an interactive and immersive remote technical conference experience at SMPTE 2020, running 10-12 November.
The IP Showcase will host a live channel on Oct. 19, the first day of the show, to provide attendees with an overview of current progress toward standards-based interoperability in the IP realm.
The Alliance for IP Media Solutions (AIMS) announced today it will host Booth A4 at SMPTE 2020: ‘Game On,’ an interactive and immersive remote technical conference experience running Nov. 10-12. With on-demand access to video sessions presented by AIMS leaders, as well as an array of white papers and other educational resources, SMPTE 2020 attendees will have the opportunity to learn more about how AIMS is working to promote and support the broadcast industry’s move to standards-based IP infrastructure for real-time professional media applications.
“The industry’s embrace of IP has accelerated in past months, with new business pressures and technical challenges driving adoption and innovation,” said AIMS Chairman Mike Cronk. “Ongoing education is vital to the success of new and expanding media-over-IP implementations, and the SMPTE annual technical conference is an ideal forum in which to share expert perspectives, insights, and practical advice on leveraging standards and specifications to achieve interoperability in the IP environment.”
AIMS presentations at SMPTE 2020 will be available for on-demand viewing in the On Demand content section of the event and will include the following:
Introduction to AIMS
Michael Cronk, AIMS Chairman, Grass Valley
In this 30-minute session, Cronk will provide background into the industry challenge AIMS is seeking to solve and explain the role AIMS plays in tackling that challenge in close collaboration with other key industry organizations. He will also provide a window into the current and future activities of AIMS as the organization seeks to foster the adoption of a common set of standards and open specifications for interoperability over IP for the media and entertainment and Pro AV industries.
Evolutions of the AIMS Roadmap and JT-NM Roadmaps
John Mailhot, AIMS TWG Chairman, Imagine Communications
The Joint Taskforce on Networked Media (JT-NM) began in early 2013 with collections of user requirements around the evolution of television infrastructure into an IP/virtualized future. In the seven years since, an enormous amount of industry focus and collaboration has led to the development and deployment of SMPTE ST 2110, AMWA NMOS, and JT-NM TR-1001-1. Mailhot will review the historical drivers and evolution of the JT-NM and AIMS technology roadmaps and look forward through the lens of current technology trends to project the future for these roadmaps — including the evolution of virtualized, cloudified, and xAAS deployment methodologies and the standardization opportunities that accompany them.
IPMX: Debunking the Myths
David Chiappini, AIMS Pro AV Chairman, Matrox
IPMX is an AV-over-IP standard for the ProAV market based on SMPTE ST 2110 and the NMOS set of open standards and specifications. Chiappini will describe how IPMX builds on top of this solid foundation to fulfill the requirements of ProAV customers. — and dispel the common misconception that SMPTE ST 2110 is overdesigned for most ProAV use cases and will result in unnecessarily complex and expensive solutions. His presentation will highlight some of the unique characteristics of IPMX that enable simpler, more cost-effective solutions.
AES67 on the WAN
Nicolas Sturmel, Senior Technologist, Merging Technologies
During this session, Sturmel will discuss WANs, LANs, and their similarities and differences as well as address questions including “Why would I need AES67 on the WAN?” and “What performance should I expect?”

Interactive Virtual Event Will Run Sept. 29-Oct. 1
The Alliance for IP Media Solutions (AIMS) today announced that registration is open for IP Oktoberfest 2020, a live, interactive virtual event for broadcast and pro AV professionals to be held Sept. 29-Oct. 1. The three-day event will highlight the industry’s significant progress toward an all-IP ecosystem supporting today’s real-world media productions.
There is no cost to participate and registration details can be found HERE.
Running daily from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. EDT, IP Oktoberfest 2020 is not a webinar. This live event will provide participants with numerous opportunities for education, interaction, and networking in a dynamic, online environment that makes it easy to move freely between meeting areas — including a live presentation stage, virtual pub, and meeting and networking areas. Attendees will learn how the SMPTE ST 2110 suite of standards and the AMWA NMOS technology stack are improving media workflows for large and small deployments. The event will also highlight the new IPMX proposed set of open standards and specifications and the benefits they can bring to pro AV workflows.
Throughout the event, multiple themed “pub rooms” will facilitate group and private discussions about the issues that matter in further standards-based IP deployment and provide opportunities to network with technologists and industry peers on topics including AES67, NMOS, SMPTE ST 2110, JPEG XS, and IPMX.
IP Oktoberfest 2020 is designed to continue to provide attendees with the informative presentations and interactions they enjoyed from AIMS at live events in past years. Bringing technology developers and end users together and fostering interaction and open discourse will be prioritized throughout the event. Standards-based IP adoption has been successful because of the community of people — across engineering, product management and marketing — that has united to discuss and address issues. IP Oktoberfest 2020 will provide an online platform for continuing this work, and participants will once again have the opportunity to meet face to face in the virtual realm.
