This tutorial will describe NMOS, the control system for SMPTE ST 2110 video over IP, in a very pragmatic and not overly technical way. Rather than digging into the syntax, we will focus on the use cases and the primary goals of the AMWA NMOS specification set and how it is used in the real world to meet the users' needs in an IP studio. We will also review the new activities such as building a universal control language that takes NMOS beyond signal routing into the realm of system control. The purpose of this talk is to answer the following questions (in simple, relatable language): • What is this NMOS thing I keep hearing about? • Why does it exist? • What does it do for me as a user? • How can it be extended to both simplify and secure the studio control system?
